The Saab Gripen is a 4.5th generation aircraft designed for austere, decentralized, dispersed operations. While the Swedish Air Force gets great value out of the JAS 39, the current operational concepts, routines and mentality of many air forces such as the United States Air Force, the Luftwaffe, or the Royal Air Force appear incompatible with Sweden’s way of running air operations.
